73 Years After D-Day, These Photos Show You How Important Their Sacrifice Was

On June 6, 1944, with “the eyes of the world” upon them, brave and selfless men stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in the name of freedom.

While many of them wouldn’t survive for more than a few yards, let alone to get home to their families, 73 years later, their sacrifice is as palpable as ever.

In 2014, photographers Peter Macdiarmid and Chris Helgren paid a visit to the same sites pictured in archived photos from the momentous invasion to show the magnitude of its impact on the present day.

What was once a town ravaged by war, it has since been filled with cafes, stores, and homes.
